The only way many car buyers would consider a new American car like the new Pontiac G6 is if Oprah Winfrey gave it to them. Of course, the new G6 makes a great gift. But can this new American car woo buyers who might otherwise consider such imports as the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Volkswagen Passat and Nissan Altima? Unlike past Pontiacs, the G6 isn't dressed in the automotive equivalent of a loud, plaid sportcoat. Pontiac has abandoned its fascination with plastic cladding. Instead, the manufacturer has smoothly executed the G6's surfaces with a sophisticated flair. When designing the G6, Pontiac employed its excellent new Epsilon platform that underpins the Chevrolet Malibu, Malibu Maxx and Saab 9-3. Here, Pontiac employed the longer 112.3-inch Maxx wheelbase, giving the interior an impressive amount of space considering the car's overall 189-inch length. It's a stiff platform that mutes any vibration and imparts a refined feel. The firm ride absorbs road shocks without transmitting them to the interior. Ride motion is well-controlled. Electric steering replaces a hydraulic system with an electric motor that measures steering input and engages the steering rack to turn the wheels. The electric motor only runs when the wheels are turned, rather than running all the time, like a hydraulic system. The electric motor doesn't require the hydraulic system's fluid and hoses. This results in less engine drain and less weight, which improves fuel economy. It also simplifies assembly, which means fewer build problems and improved reliability. For most buyers, the 3.5-liter motor will be all the engine needed. Even when filled with five passengers, the car was powerful enough for dodging traffic in the New York City metro area. The feel of the pedal made this car easy to launch smoothly and quickly, while the firm and well-bolstered seats made it easy to spend a lot of time. The four-wheel disc brakes had excellent stopping power and the pedal feel was a revelation for an inexpensive GM car - no mushiness and a progressive feel.
